Learn about the Program for Performing Arts Medicine and schedule an appointment here.

The Performing Arts Medicine staff ask that if you are waiting to be seen during our Friday morning injury checks to please be respectful of the other student being seen and the clinician by waiting with an appropriate distance to give some privacy. Please do not assume that your fellow dancer, even if they are a friend, don’t mind if you hear the conversation. The confidentiality of clinician and patient is very important even among our close network of friends and colleagues in the Department of Dance. Thank you.

Foot Fitness Continued…
Last month we covered that you need to do as much for your feet as they do for you. Hopefully you’ve mastered the exercises previously given to you and ready to add more tricks for your toes.

Foot Intrinsics: These exercises will help strengthen the muscles that live within the foot. Do 3 x 10 of these 5 times a week.
  • Toe extension – Sit with feet flat and legs parallel. Try to lift all five toes off the floor making sure the ankle stays neutral.
  • You can increase the challenge by placing a Theraband® over your toes to resist up through. We suggest a red band (after all your toes are pretty small.)
  • Curling – Sit with feet flat and legs parallel. Curl all five toes under.
  • You can increase the challenge by placing the foot on a hand towel and use your toe curling to scrunch the towel up under the arch of the foot.
  • Dome + Foot Flexion – Dome toes. While maintaining the dome, flex the ankle making sure you stay in neutral, parallel. Slowly relax the foot back down to the floor, then release the dome. Repeat 2-3 sets of 10.

Your piece may not end up being about what you want it to be about. Hopefully though, it might end up being about something. The work is to notice what that something is. It might be more interesting than you think.
