 SPECIAL EVENTS

Fall Undergraduate Research WeekSeptember 16-20, 2013. Join us for a week of student and faculty panels leading up to The Student Poster Forum on September 20, 2013.

Lecture: Martin Tröndle (Zeppelin University, Germany). “Space, Movement and Attention: Affordances of the Museum Environment.” Friday, September 20, 2013. 12-2pm in the Arts Administration, Education and Policy department Room 110K. 1961 Tuttle Park Place, 1st Floor Ohio Stadium. This lecture presents results from an in-depth visitor analysis conducted in the St. Gallen Museum of Fine Arts. Based on the psychological concepts of “valence” (Lewin), “standing patterns of behavior” (Barker) and “affordance” (Gibson), Tröndle investigates the influence of curatorial settings upon the visitors’ spatial movement. With the help of the latest tracking technology, exact visitor positions and movement paths inside the exhibition were recorded. The analysis of the movement data uncovered visitor streams alongside so-called “space-cells”, which were found to influence the rhythmicity of the museum visit. Space-cells are characterized by a reference point attracting visitor attention, producing a stopping-moment, followed by a cell-specific movement pattern visitors’ carried out in relation to the cell’s composition. These results are important for curators, whose settings can influence visitor attention, their itinerary and, over all, the aesthetical effects of artworks.

Verb Ballets presents FUSE Saturday, September 28, 2013, 8pm at the The Akron Civic Theatre. 182 South Main Street Akron, Ohio. Program will feature the new company work by Tommie-Waheed Evans, a dancer with PHILADANCO! Evans returned to Verb Ballets this summer to create Dark Matter (2013). His new work is not to be missed and requires percussive driving energy and athleticism of the dancers. Verb Ballets will revived the neo-classical pas de deux Andante Sostenuto (1988) by Heinz Poll and danced to the second movement of Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto No. 2. Returning to the stage will be Duet choreographed by Poll in 1979 in the neo-classical style of George Balanchine. Also on the program is Passing By (2013) choreographed by Antonio Brown, a dancer with Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. The contemporary work commissioned for Verb Ballets intertwines patterns and bodies for a visually dynamic performance. OSUdance’s own Ca’la Henderson (BFA) will be dancing in the work of Tammie-Waheed Evans.
