         SPECIAL EVENTS       

Winter Concert: Shifting Focus. January 24-26, 2013; 8pm in Pomerene 316. Friday night's performance will be streamed online! A series of short works created by BFA and MFA students, this year’s program includes twelve original choreographic works of contemporary dance. Stemming from a diverse range of inspirations from the purely conceptual to the heart-wrenchingly personal, students explore creating dance for a unique space which shows the choreography from all directions. $5 general admission. Tickets available from the OSU Theatre Box Office or (614) 292-2295 and can be purchased at the door, subject to availability. Parking available at the Neil Avenue Garage.

Suite Rosa, Friday-Saturday, January 25-26, 3013, 8pm at the Lincoln Theater in downtown Columbus. MFA candidate Joyelle Fobbs is dancing Rosa. Based on the life of Rosa Parks, Rosa is a 7-minute work choreographed by Billy Wilson and restaged for the world premier of musical score Suite Rosa by the Columbus Jazz Orchestra. Beautiful Struggle by The Baker-Tarpaga Dance Project. Saturday, February 2, 2013. 2pm at the King Arts Complex Auditorium. 867 Mt. Vernon Ave in Columbus. Esther Baker-Tarpaga, Dante Brown, D. Sebala Grimes, Olivier Tarpaga, and Abby Zbikowski will he performing the work as part of the event The Role of Struggle in African American History, sharing the bill with The Ohio State University African American Voices Gospel Choir and others.

MFA Event: Library Dance Works. Monday, February 4, 2013. 12:15pm in Thompson Library. Brian Devine experiments with site dance for his final project, exploring the ways in which the dance is informed by the space in which it is performed. Free admission.

Performance: Doug Varone and Dancers. Wednesday, February 6, 2013. 7:30pm at Clark State Performing Arts Center in Springfield Ohio. Tickets are free, but there are no online sales and they must be picked up at the Kuss Auditorium box office in advance. Contact Rashana Smith at for details and to coordinate pickup.


Upcoming: Sabela Grimes “Funkamental” Master Class. Friday, February 1, 2013. 10:20-12pm in Pomerene 316. This masterclass will explore Funkamental body language, mechanics, and spiritual modes present in the transmission of movement ideas between Hip Hop/Street Dance practitioners. Participants will develop phrases in an effort to explore the concept of collective individuality, musicality/beat freakin’, voice/personal movement, and collective aesthetic. Weekend of Contact ImprovisationFebruary 22-24, 2013 in Ann Arbor, MI. OSU Contact Club officers Shannon Drake and Josh Hines invite you to join them on a road trip to Ann Arbor! MFA student Erin Carlisle Norton and her company The Moving Architects will present Worlding with international guest artists Noa Zuk (Israel) and Joanie Audet (Quebec) on March 9-10, 2013. In addition, there will be Gaga Master classes traught by Noa Zuk available for professionals and free for college students on March 10-11, 2013. As part of the performances, Erin will be presenting her MFA Project Two Worlds and group work Loneland, and Noa will perform her works A Droom Come Tree and O.M.S. with Ariel Freedman. As part of her research for her senior project, Ella Matweyou will be teaching free yoga classes on Sunday mornings 11am-12pm in Pomerene 205, starting February 3, 2013. Anyone is welcome to come on a drop-in basis, but for the purposes of her project Ella would like as many dance majors as possible. Participants should bring a mat if they have one.
