Locality: The PartyFriday, Oct 12, 2012. Join OSUdance alums 7pm at the Columbus Dance Theatre, 592 East Main Street. Have a work in progress you would like to show on a lit stage?  Come to Locality: The Party and enter a choreographic raffle. If chosen, your piece (limit of 10 minutes) will be shown on the Columbus Dance Theatre stage. These performances will also be documented on video. The drawing with be at 8pm before the performances by Kristina Isabelle Dance Company, Tim Veach director of Columbus Dance Theater, Noelle Chun from They Might Be Dancers and the Premiere of Union Station, a video dance directed by Lindsay Caddle LaPointe of Linden Tree Productions. The open stage will then open up at 9pm! $10 at the door, with food and drink courtesy of local Columbus businesses to be served at no additional cost.

Locality Dance Festival Bus Tour. Saturday, October 13, 2012. 2-6pm. Locality 2012 is a public performance-art initiative designed to highlight beautiful spaces of Columbus neighborhoods through the lens of dance, in celebration of 200ColumbUS The Bicentennial.

Locality Master Classes. Sunday, October 14, 2012. All day at Feverhead, the Chushin Center, OSU Sports Medicine, and the Columbus Dance Theater. Classes and workshops from everything from myofascial release to Gaga technique.

Lecture: Dr. Thomas F. DeFrantz. Unchecked Popularity: Neoliberal Circulations of Black Social DanceMonday, October 22, 2012 - 12:30-2pm at George Wells Knight House, 104 East 15th Avenue. African American social dances are complex performances that tie social agency, communal exchange, individual creativity, and personal expression to practices that demonstrate vectors of gender, sexuality, ability, location, class, age, and place. This talk offers a critique of the expansive category of popular culture built around circulations of black social dance.

OhioDance Workshop. Saturday, November 3, 2012. 9am-2pm at Fort Hayes Arts and Academic High School. Registration deadline October 24, 2012. A day of professional learning to explore strategies for implementing the revised Ohio Fine Arts Standards in Dance - Dance educators will lead dynamic movement sessions demonstrating a range of ways that the Ohio Fine Arts Standards in Dance can be interpreted and implemented to promote rich arts experiences for all learners. More information at OhioDance website.


Indian Students Association presents NavratriNovember 2, 2012 at OSU. Navratri is a nine day stretch of festivity which includes traditional dances and religious ceremonies. See the event page on Facebook for tickets and information.

Dalcroze Eurhythmics w/ Dr. Susan Chess. Great course for Music, Dance, Theater & Wellness Majors!  SPRING: First 7 weeks. Dance 5191, 1 CR. Pomerene 205, 3-5pm. All Majors welcome! Dalcroze Eurhythmics is an approach to music that uses movement to clarify, illustrate, and reinforce music concepts. Class activities will include movement, vocalizing, playing instruments, improvising, discussion, and more. Questions? Contact Instructor at: chess.1. Trouble registering? Alum performing in New York. On Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at 7:30pm, Dixon Place in NYC will be present Alexis del Sol (MFA 2011) as part of BelaDo├▒aDansa: Latina Choreographers Showcase. She will show Puertas Deslizantes/Sliding Doors, part of her MFA project presented last Fall. Congratulations Alexis!

From the Dance Notation Bureau: The first foreign edition of Labanotation is to be published by the end of 2012 in China. We congratulate Bing-Yu Luo, the head translator, who completed this exciting project. More information in the current DNB newsletter.

Jimmy Rawlins, Columbus’ most-enduring ballroom dance instructor and father of Lynn Dally of the Jazz Tap Ensemble, passed away last week at 97. Read more at the Columbus Dispatch.
