Graduate Students are invited to participate in the Literacy and the Arts GradSem hosted by LiteracyStudies @OSU!  The GradSem will present the research of three dance researchers: Alex Harlig (Dance), Marissa Nesbit (Art Ed) and Jessica Zeller (Dance) with Rachael Riggs Leyva (Dance) moderating. Topics demonstrate a range of literacy-related issues in dance from the relationship of audience institutions to instances of "borrowing" choreography; to integrating arts and non-arts content via a dance and language arts curriculum for elementary students; to the role of ballet dancing manuals and the effect of democracy and capitalism on them in the early 20th century. Join us for lunch and discussion! June 1, 2012 11:30am-1pm, at the Humanities Institute, 104 E 15th. Lunch will be provided. For further information or to RSVP (for a free lunch!) please email Rachael Riggs Leyva (riggs-leyva.1)

Hip Hop I
DANCE 1151 • 2CR. MW 3-4:40pm
Hip Hop II
DANCE 2152 • 2CR. TTh 3-4:40pm.
Instructor: Jennifer Meckley. DRAKE 1036. Non-major intro and intermediate studio practice of hip hop dance; includes survey of history, theory, and literature.

Ballet I
DANCE 1111 • 2CR. MW 12:45-2:20pm. Instructor: Paige Phillips. DRAKE 1036. This class is designed to expose the absolute beginner to ballet as well as give those with a little more experience an opportunity to hone their skills. As we practice ballet technique we will also build strength, flexibility, focus, expression, and musicality (the class features live piano accompaniment).

Contemporary I
DANCE 1101 • 2CR. TTh 12:45-2:20pm. Instructor: Paige Phillips. DRAKE 1036. This beginning level contemporary dance course is intended to cultivate bodily awareness through an exploration of the range of movement in relation to time, space, and effort. Taking inspiration from the ideologies of early modern dancers, this course introduces students to physical possibilities that exceed habitual ways of moving and understanding the body.

Writing About Dance
DANCE 2367 • 3CR. MWF 12:45pm-2:45pm. Instructor: Michael Morris. Music/Dance Library. Provides a rigorous opportunity to view, discuss, read, think and write about contemporary dance and its history through the study and practice of criticism.

Western Concert Dance: Renaissance to Present
DANCE 2401 • 3CR. MWF 10:20am-12:20pm. Instructor: Veronica Stanich. Music/Dance Library. From the European origins of classical ballet, to the influence of the Africanist aesthetic, to boundary-breaking experimentations of the twentieth century, this course investigates chronologically the aesthetic and cultural themes embedded in the history of concert dance in the United States.
This course satisfies a Visual and Performing Arts GE requirement.  Viewing, discussing, and writing about dance sharpen our abilities to interpret the ambiguous, articulate the complicated, and consider multiple perspectives—useful skills regardless of your major!

This Summer: Adult Jazz Classes, lead by Shane Carpenter, are happening at Infusion Dance. 1-hour, consisting of warm-up, progressions, and int/adv contemporary or lyrical combination each session. Cost is free for first class and $10/each or $30/month afterwards. 8 – 9pm every Tuesday this summer. For more information, contact Shane at 614.220.8780
