Free Workshop at EMMA
Isadora Basics: Interactive Control for Multi-Media Performance. Saturday November 5, 2011, 12-2:30pm
at the Experimental Media and Movement Arts Lab (EMMA)
1224 Kinnear Rd., Columbus OH.
Isadora is a program for interactive control of digital media during performance, offering real-time manipulation of video and audio. This workshop will introduce basic programming skills in Isadora, enabling participants to build a patch that has the ability to: play and mix several recorded and live video feeds simultaneously; manipulate attributes in real-time, e.g. zoom, speed, delay, brightness, color, looping, special effects; and create a user-friendly control page with sliders and buttons that alter video and audio during performance. In addition, the workshop will demonstrate how to connect Isadora to required hardware at EMMA such as the video switcher, projectors, and cameras. More information about Isadora here. This workshop is open to students at OSU. No prior experience is necessary, although basic computer literacy and some familiarity with the EMMA lab is an asset. Participants will be limited to eight. African Performing Ensembles Olivier Tarpaga. Winter Quarter 2012. Music 208.20 / 780.20. This course will introduce students to the rich art of the Griot. The main instruments will be the Djembé and the Dun dun drum. Students will learn and perform several rhythms from the Manding Empire, which comprises Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Gambia, Guinea Bissau and Senegal. Through discussions of culture and music traditions, students will understand the integrity of drumming in the daily life of West Africa.

Hiphop Literacies: The Globalization of Black Popular Culture, An Interdisciplinary Conference at The Ohio State University. May 9-11, 2012. The 2012 Hiphop Literacies conference is designed to explore Hiphop as a site of knowledge formation, identity construction and learning. Various global Hiphop cultures have emerged as a response to numerous socioeconomic, political, and cultural factors influencing new youth identity formations so extensively that its methodology is now an important area of cross- and inter-disciplinary study. The diverse elements of Hiphop that have emerged from black and brown youth starting in the 70s have changed the ways in which we think about how identities are defined in social contexts. Graduate Students: Do you need research or scholarly support for this year and next: 2011-2013? The Center for the Study and Teaching of Writing (CSTW) is offering awards of up to $2,500 to support dissertation research about the teaching of writing or the study of writing itself. That research and scholarship can be historical, empirical, or theoretical in nature. Applicants must be graduate students at The Ohio State University with an approved dissertation prospectus. Call for Submission to “Moving Works”
This year the OhioDance Showcase of Choreography will take on a new format. Choreographers interested in participating in a mini residency will submit a portfolio of their works by January 10, 2012. More information available on the OSUdance Professional Resources page
