Andreya Ouamba & Fatou Cisse

Born in Congo, based in Senegal, Andréya Ouamba is one of the major emerging choreographers in West Africa. He won first prize at the prestigious competition Danse L’Afrique Danse 2007 with the duet Improvisé 2, which has since toured globally. Andréya Ouamba was invited by Festival Avignon to commission a solo for him from Kenyan artists Opiyo Okach, which has also toured internationally, inc. Theater der Welt in Germany in summer 2008. Andreya is a catalyst of dance development in Dakar. He is artistic director and organizer of AEx Corps, a periodical workshop and experimental program for West African dancers. He recently collaborated with Reggie Wilson/Fist and Heels, which is currently touring the USA with performances at BAM, UCLA Live, The Walker Art Center, and Miami. Ouamba has performed and led residencies for Working Dance Festival in London, in Germany, France, and recently implemented a Dakar-based residency for local dancers and international teachers.

Repertory Dance Theatre / Merce Cunningham Intensive
June 13-24, 2011 – University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah.
RDT is celebrating the legacy of Merce Cunningham by hosting two Cunningham Master Teachers, Patricia Lent and Neil Greenberg. Ms. Lent will teach a two-hour Cunningham technique class each morning and also the repertory class which will feature Cunningham’s 1967 work, Scramble, a work that students will learn alongside the RDT company. Mr. Greenberg will teach the composition class based on a historical 1978 workshop Merce conducted which led students through the compositional process of his 1976 work Torse. Call for Submissions: Topanga Film Festival Dance Film Showcase. This is the second year for the program directed and curated by Cari Ann Shim Sham*, which for it's first year in 2010, screened films including Nora (Alla Kovgan & David Hinton), Advance (Mitchell Rose), Mothers & Daughters (Margaret Williams & Victoria Marks) and Chili Pepper (David Rousseve).

Submissions should focus on one of the following areas:
1.) Choreography for camera-original work made specifically for video or film or re-staged for the camera.
2.) Experimental and digital technologies-work that extend the boundaries of dance and can exist only in video, film or new technologies.
3.) Student work-submissions produced while the filmmakers were students or by current students.

Dance Festival with Service Learning Focus
At the Now & Next Dance Mentoring Project, college women and recent graduates study somatics, contemporary dance, and improvisation each morning; teach dance classes and mentor middle school girls each afternoon; and participate in professional development workshops with the professional dance artists in the evenings. English 789: Introduction to Graduate Studies in Digital Media. See attached flyer for a graduate class that emphasizes the theoretical analysis of our media-saturated educational environment and the active production of media projects. This is the introductory graduate course for the Digital Media Studies specialization in English.

Cope: Japan. Ricky Morant, of Cirque du Soleil Tokyo, is looking for choreographers interested in submitting a work to benefit Japan relief efforts & the Red Cross. Choreographed works should observe the following guidelines:
• 3 minutes in length.
• Created in 11 hours: This means a series of rehearsals that total 11 hours.
• Represent your reaction to the events in Japan but also to what is happening to the world as we know it.
• Words to consider in process: Cope, strength, perseverance, community, determination.

Critical Difference Professional Development Grants
Professional Development and Women of Color Advancement Grants are available for women faculty and staff continuously employed by Ohio State for at least one year, and students (graduate/professional students with a 3.0 GPA and undergraduates with a 2.5 GPA). Grants can be used for professional development activities, research, etc. Significant financial need is a key consideration. Applications are due Thursday, April 14 and are available online.

Career Development Grant program encourages graduate students to prepare for placement into their chosen field. Students will submit their Career Development Grant Application to the Council of Graduate Students (CGS) for an opportunity to receive an award to defray costs associated with the development of their careers. Grants of up to $250 will be awarded for professional development activities, such as conferences, professional association dues, licensure fees, study materials for licensure, and workshops. Spring 2011 Deadline: April 25, 2011. Funding Period: June 20, 2011 -September 20, 2011. Applicants will be notified by June 6, 2011. Free books!
There is a hamper of books in the loading dock room by Studio 4 that are all up for grabs. Many of them focus on visual art, but there are also a number of dance books. Please help yourself.
