Discover Spirituality through the Arts: Liturgical and Contemporary Dance Concert. The concert includes a staging of lively stirring solos from Helen Tamiris’ Negro Spirituals. Tamiris is an American modern dance pioneer and choreographed the solos in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Dancer-director Rachael Leyva (MFA, and current PhD candidate at the Dance Department at OSU) reconstructed the solos from Labanotation, a symbol-based language used to analyze, describe and document movement. The cast for Negro Spirituals includes dancers from Broad Street United Methodist Church with performances by professional tap dancer Jenai Cutcher (MFA in Dance at OSU and known in Columbus for her documentary Thinking on Their Feet: Women of the Renaissance) and community dancer Amy Schmidt (MFA in Dance at OSU). Live musical performance of the traditional spirituals (Moses, Git on Board, Crucifixion, Swing Low Sweet Chariot, and Joshua) will be by mezzo-soprano Nancy Roberts, baritone H.L. Wright, and pianist Brian Johnson. The pieces are being performed with permission by the Dance Notation Bureau who has committed itself specifically to the preservation of dance for over 70 years.
The concert, featuring additional contemporary and hip hop performances by Footsteps on Wings (Debra Tribune, Artistic Director), will take place at 7pm on Friday and Saturday, June 4-5, 2010 in the sanctuary of Broad Street United Methodist Church, located at the corner of Broad Street and N. Washington Avenue (501 East Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215-3822), across from the Columbus Museum of Art. Parking is available in the lot across the street. The concert is free to the public.

Student Responsibility for Performance Dubbing
Once students have graduated and are no longer paying college tech fees, they cannot use the Medialab computers or equipment and they cannot copy concert tapes. They also cannot ask the department staff to do this for them, either before graduation or at a later date. It is each students' responsibility to get the performance data they will need in the future. (All the other departments in the college follow this same practice for student data.) Students must make copies for their future needs by the end of Finals Week of each quarter, as the College IT Dept cleans out stored server data the following week in all the computers labs in the college. Please note that due to certain intellectual property laws and dept contracts, some dept guest artist choreography cannot be copied. If you have questions about this department policy, you may contact the Chair’s Office at 292-0984. For college server storage cleaning questions, you may contact the Arts and Humanities IT Dept at 688-4447, firstname.lastname@example.org or visit their website. This department policy has been in place since 2005.

As the end of the quarter nears,
students please take the time to do the online evaluations of your instructors. Your faculty cares tremendously about the quality of instruction and your learning experience; please kindly let them know what is working and where you have questions or concerns. All the data and especially the comments are extremely helpful in assessing how faculty are doing, and they are seen by me, the Chair, and used in promotion and tenure review documents. Thank you very much for the effort in this important task.
