SUPA 2008
July 7 – August 2
Festival for Choreographers with
Neil Greenberg, Susan Rethorst, John Jasperse, and Jeanine Durning
Studio Upsun* in Pennsylvania is a new initiative designed to provide opportunities to engage in in-depth investigations of choreographic practices. We have looked for rigorous and sophisticated choreographers who are also interested in teaching and its relationship to making. We have given them an entire week to work with a limited amount of students (max 14) via composition, repertory, mentoring, or any combination of practices they feel useful. It is our hope that these workshops will result in a give and take of knowledge and practice that is rigorous, personal, intense, and intensely pleasurable.
*Upsun: (noun) the period between the rising and setting of the sun.

REMINDERS AND SHOUT OUTS
ALUM OF THE WEEK
Jordan Fuchs teaches at Texas Woman's University, just premiered his new piece, Thicket, at Danspace Project in New York, and is an all-around nice guy.

from the SVPP Collection
Kudos to the hard work (long and late nights we hear) and wonderful performance of The Magic Flute...... Susan Hadley's as ever smart and adaptive choreography, and dancing by:
Jolene Bartley, Christianne Beffel, Alex Bowden, Cortney Crenshaw, Marissa Guthrie, Daniele Meier, Jamie Murzynowski, and Cecilia Petursson.

TED Talks (Technology, Education, Design)
If you haven't seen this talk, please take the time now - it's timely,
inspiring, sobering, and funny.....
My favorite line: "she's not sick, she's a dancer"....

from the TED Talks website:
"Why don't we get the best out of people? Sir Ken Robinson argues that it's
because we've been educated to become good workers, rather than creative
thinkers. Students with restless minds and bodies -- far from being
cultivated for their energy and curiosity -- are ignored or even
stigmatized, with terrible consequences. "We are educating people out of
their creativity," Robinson says. It's a message with deep resonance."

It is particularly apt as here through our program and our faculty's and
students' research, we are increasingly exposing dance as a key spoke in the
arena of human ecology: whereby we might "reconstitute our conception of the
richness of human capacity...." for nothing less than the future of our
earth and humanity.
