Sololos is one of the purest expressions of Trisha Brown’s love affair with choreographic structure. Created in 1976, it is a study of causality - cause and effect, as well as logical processes, properties, variables and facts in which dancers respond to instructions called to them from a dancer offstage. The piece begins in simple unison, quickly unravels into visual complexity, then re-ravels itself back to its beginning prompted by instructions given by the caller. Governed by strict adherence to a set of rules and requirements, it exists in endless permutation as a function of these improvised calls. The vocabulary is entirely fixed, yet the form is composed in the moment.

KAREN BELL has been named the Associate Vice President for Arts Outreach. Senior Vice President and Special Assistant to the President, Jeff Kaplan, says “In creating this new position, Ohio State is affirming its commitment to the arts, which are critical to the cultural and economic vitality of our state. Our renewed outreach efforts will naturally include education and business outreach. We want to vigorously support the arts as another essential component of our plan. Karen is the ideal choice to lead that effort.”

JENAI CUTCHER has been awarded a University Presidential Fellowship. This fellowship recognizes outstanding scholarship and research ability, plus provides recipients with the opportunity to devote full time to their dissertation research - in this case a film she is making "Thinking On Their Feet" - a feature-length documentary about the women who revolutionized the art of American percussive dance. Congratulations and thanks also to Vicki Uris, Chair of Grad Studies and Jenai’s committee chair, and Candace Feck, advisor, for the support and work they put into putting Jenai forward.
