and perform in works by Meghan Durham and Annie Kloppenberg
Meghan will share excerpts from “Appetite,” an ensemble dance work that weaves precise physicality and partnering, using imagery and symbolic food choices as an organizing framework. Chocolate cake may be involved... Annie will create a new work that will be a collage of sections from previously choreographed pieces and new material created in collaboration with the cast. The piece will likely include props, spoken and projected text, nuanced movement material, and humor with ironic underpinnings.

Performance Opportunity!
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED for“Surprise performers” for Nature Theater of Oklahoma’s Poetics: a ballet brut Wed-Fri Feb 6-8, 2008, 8 pm at Wexner Center for the Arts’ Mershon Auditorium
The Production needs between 30-40 local performer/community members. There are NO requirements in terms of training or prior experience. These performers must provide their own costumes (jeans, tee-shirt and tennis shoes are all that is required), and be available for all rehearsals and performances.

Weekly Announcements | WEEK 8: November 5-11, 2007

Dance Dept. Performance
Amy Schmidt's MFA studio project of reconstructing Fred Berk's 1953 "Holiday in Israel" is underway! There have been two successful performances thus far at the Temple Israel Religious School (Oct 28, grades 3-7) and Indianola Elementary-at-Everett (Nov 2, grades 2-3). The cast and crew (see below) have been fabulous and the children have all enjoyed a little dancing with Israeli culture/dance/background and fresh challah (bread). The last two school performances will be on Monday, November 12 at Bexley High School and Arts Impact Middle School.

The Lecture/Demonstration in Sullivant Theatre is for the Department of Dance and the general public to come and enjoy the performance (and Amy talking :-). It will be on Tuesday, November 13 at 4:30pm in the Theatre.

SPECIAL REQUEST: Amy needs two more crew members for the Nov 10 dress/tech on Sullivant stage and the Nov 13 lec/dem. Crew members would be backstage and so need to be able to come to the Nov 10 tech from 9am-1pm and at the Nov 13 lec/dem from 3:30-5:30pm. Please email Amy at schmidt.442@osu.edu if you are interested.

Master Class
On Monday, November 5, JoAnna Mendl Shawwill be offering a master class during Abby's 10:30 technique class.

JoAnna Mendl Shaw is currently a choreographer and teacher whose work stretches the boundaries of traditional dance. After establishing her dance career in New York City, Shaw went on to complete an MFA at The University of Utah. She also taught, toured, and performed with the Bill Evans Dance Company in Seattle, taught on the faculty at Cornish Institute, and directed her own Seattle-based company, Danceworks Northwest.
Shaw moved back to NYC in 1991, taught on the faculty at NYU/Tisch School of the Arts, Princeton University, and Montclair State. In 1994, Shaw completed her certification in Laban Movement Analysis, which initiated an interest in developing an interdisciplinary movement language that would bridge dance and athletic training. These investigations led Shaw to teach and choreograph for the Swiss Gymnastic Federation, become a performance coach for the Swiss Olympic Gymnastic Dance Team, and choreograph for ice dancers and in-line skaters. Of the five commissioned works Shaw created for Ice Theatre New York, two remain in their permanent repertory. Shaw is also the recipient of two NEA Choreographic Fellowships.
In 1997 Shaw began investigating a merger of dance and equestrian artistry. In 1999, she formed The Equus Projects: a company of NYC based dancers who collaborate with high-level equestrians throughout the country, creating performance works for dancers, horses, and equestrians. Merging the worlds of arts and athletics, The Equus Projects has produced full evening performance works for arts and equine venues, performed with live orchestras, and trained with internationally recognized equestrians. The company has gained national recognition for its innovative teaching of clinics for equestrians.
Shaw continues to teach composition for The Juilliard School. She also teaches improvisation, composition, and choreography for the Ailey/Fordham University BFA program.

Artist Roundtable Discussion
Artists: Join the Discussion
The Greater Columbus Arts Council invites local artists to participate in a series of discussions about their needs for success, and how GCAC can better play a role in helping them reach their goals.

GCAC will host four Artist Roundtable discussions throughout November at various Columbus-area locations to get feedback from the individual artist community. The following is a list of dates, times and locations for each session:

5-7 p.m. on Wed., Nov. 7 at the Columbus Music Hall, 734 Oak St.
7-9 p.m. on Thurs., Nov. 8 at Junctionview Studios, 889 Williams Ave.
11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Mon., Nov. 12 at the Columbus Dance Theatre, 592 E. Main St.
4-6 p.m. on Sun., Nov. 18 at the Panera Bread meeting room in Clintonville, 4519 N. High St.
