Hiroaki Umeda Comes to the Dance Department
Fri Oct 5th
Japanese choreographer/performer Hiroaki Umeda will hold a question and answer session where he will talk about the evolution of his aesthetic and his holistic approach to performance, which places equal focus on lighting, sound, and set design, and on his movement ideas.
Thu-Sat, Oct 4-6 | 8 pm
$18 general public
"The performance space was transformed into an uncanny magnetic field."-Dance
Hiroaki Umeda is one of Japan's most promising young choreographer/dancers to revitalize the international scene. His ultra-contemporary approach retains traces of butoh and street dance forms even as it explores a radically minimalist aesthetic that flashes between the sublime and the violent, fluid grace and sudden shock waves of movement.
From his current base in Paris, Umeda has created his own company-S20-in which he appears as a solo performer. His intensely physical meditations on space and sensory perception are subsumed within environments he designs of sparse dramatic lighting, strobing cyber-imagery, and crackling digital soundscapes. In one piece he'll perform here, he "mirror[s] the pulsing score with an accumulation of motion, starting with his feet and rising gradually to overtake his buckling legs and rubbery torso" (New York Times).
There is a sign-up sheet on the board outside Nadine's Costume Shope - Studio 5 is not really big, so we need to make sure those on the list get in.
PLEASE SIGN-UP SO WE CAN PLAN ACCORDINGLY!!!
Pre-registration This Friday
The Department of Dance will hold Pre-Registration on Friday 5 October.
8:45 Modern 1 - John & Misty will meet with the First-Year majors in Studio 1 to go over Winter Quarter offerings, schedules and possibilities - faculty teaching First-Year courses in Winter are encouraged to attend, as well.
12:30-1 - John will meet with the remaining Undergrads in Studio 1 and Vicki with Grads in Studio 2 to go over Winter. Again, faculty are encouraged to attend to discuss their course offerings.
Transfer students should try to attend the 12:30 session with John, then make an appointment to meet with me to 'firm-up' your dance courses for Winter.
1-2:30 will be Repertory Rehearsals.
Anyone not able to attend the appropriate meeting should see John, Misty or Vicki to get the departmental winter schedules.
Autumn Quarter Census Date
Please note that next Wednesday is the Census Date. That means, EVERYONE MUST BE REGISTERED FOR AUTUMN QUARTER CLASSES BY 5:00PM TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2ND!! The department will not sign any add slips after that day. Please make sure that you are registered for all of your classes, and that all of your students are registered.
Not-To-Be-Missed Master Classes in the Department
We have a variety of Master Classes and Guest Artist Residencies scheduled for the year. Amy Raymond was here last
week and Manwe is teaching a hip hop class this Monday, 1 October.
As part of his residency at the Wexner, Hirokai will be with us Friday 5 October for a Q&A/Discussion. This will be in Studio 5 from 10:30-12. Preferably we all would have attended his performance the evening before, but most of us will be here for the Dance on Camera showing on the 4th. There is another sign-up sheet going up to reserve a space for his event.
Tania Isaac will be here for 5 weeks starting on Monday 15 October. While with us she will teach level 3 Modern, be a guest in African Diaspora a few times, and choreograph a new piece for Dance Downtown. We will have a Friday Forum open to everyone on 19 October to get to know her. The forum will be from 12:15-1:15 in Studio 1. Rep on the 19th
will be from 1:30-2:30.
Keep an eye on the blog and internal calendar for future dates and residency announcements.
